The new UK Labour government is set to lift the de-facto onshore wind ban in England, Rachel Reeves will declare in her first major speech as Chancellor.

Reeves will make the pledge as part of an overhaul of the planning system that she will outline later today, according to the BBC.

No large-scale onshore wind farms have been built in England in almost 10 years since a Conservative-led administration changed planning rules to make it all but impossible to secure consent.
Labour has repeatedly pledged to lift the onshore wind ban moratorium while in opposition. Keir Starmer’s party secured an overhaul majority in last week’s general election.

The Chancellor will also say today that the planning revamp will spur grid upgrades and other energy infrastructure, according to the broadcaster.

Reeves will promise to make economic growth a “national mission”, reported the BBC.

She will set out Labour’s plan for the economy and say the era of “chaos and irresponsibility is over”.
