It was a dark, cold Halloween night. I was relaxing on the sofa, when I heard a sharp scraping sound from the hall. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end.
I sat motionless and just listened… Silence…
It happened again. Louder and higher pitched. Like a fingernail on a blackboard.
I stood up cautiously, uncertainly. I crept toward the door, picking up a heavy vase on the way. I felt like I needed a weapon.
As I opened the door, there was an abrupt pop and all the lights went out – pitch darkness.
Luckily after only 20 milli-seconds my battery powered emergency power supply kicked in, and the lights came on. All was well. It turned out the cat had knocked over a broom which had scraped along the wall. Mystery solved.
