I very much enjoyed a recent episode of the The Life Scientific on BBC Radio 4, in which Professor Saiful Islam of Bath University, talks to Jim Al-Khalili about his life and work studying the materials that make renewable energy possible.
Professor Islam has accelerated the use of computer modelling of the behaviours of solids. Among other things this has led to his work increasing the speed and life of rechargeable batteries, and more recently the emergence of Perovskite as a new material able to convert solar to electricity at the efficiency of silicon.
All these developments are a vital precursor to our desire to make ever more direct use of solar energy to power our world with minimal carbon release. In years to come, I am sure planet earth will owe a debt of gratitude to innovaters like Professor Saiful Islam.
